A tender perennial from the Arabian Peninsula, widely naturalized in tropical, semi-tropical, and arid climates around the world. Cultivated for medicinal topical treatment. Stemless or very short-stemmed plant growing up to 2.5' tall that spreads by offsets. Yellow summer flowers on a spike up to 3' tall.
Forms a root symbiosis called arbuscular mycorrhiza that assists with nutrient uptake.
South Africa native with thin, white-striped leaves and a graceful, cascading habit. Flowering stems bear loose panicles of small, white, starry flowers with plantlets forming at the flowering nodes. Hang or set up high to appreciate cascading plantlets.
Perennial plant of the grape family native to tropical Asia, the Arabian Peninsula and much of Africa. Can reach 5' in the wild, this plant has been used as a medicine for eons. Works well as a reduced care hanging basket.
Southern African native predominantly growing in thick valley vegetation of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Under natural conditions, flower clusters cover the plant in masses thick enough to hide the foliage. Initiate blooming when the nights get longer in the fall by withholding water and dropping nighttime temperatures to around 55˚F. Commence watering after several weeks and enjoy the flowers!
Deciduous, herbaceous, perennial shrub with bright green leaves and greenish flowers. The flowers are enclosed within long-lasting and bright bracts of red. Loosely formed, spiny and irregularly shaped, with thick, grey spines, it can grow to 5 or 6 feet tall in areas where it can remain outside. Expect a 2' specimen when grown as a houseplant.
Deciduous, spiny, usually leafless, cactus-like succulent shrub or small tree. 15' but is typically maintained as a 1 to 2-foot houseplant. Spiny stems and mottled branches that are green with white lines. Small seasonal leaves appear in summer after rain but drop quickly leaving the plant leafless. Flowering is rare and the plant does not tolerate frost. Other characteristics include 4-angled stems with paired black stem thorns. If injured, the plant will ooze a caustic, milky latex.
Succulent, spineless shrub or tree with a heavy trunk, brown primary branches, and pencil-like, green, new branches. Leaves cluster at the tip of the branches as do insignificant flowers within showy bracts. Branch tips turn brightly colored when grown in full sun. Naturallyncan grow to 30'. Expect to keep it less than 3' as a houseplant.
Tall growing, columnar specimens. Summer flowering, typically inconspicuous with greenish bracts. Inconspicuous thorns shoot out in pairs rather than individual spines like Cactus.
Sansevieria are native to Africa, Madagascar, and southern Asia. Late summer flowering on spikes up to 2'. White flowers are heavily fragrant but not long lasting.
