People often ask me how I became interested in plants. Honestly, I’ve always wondered how anyone couldn’t be fascinated by them. From the food we eat and the medicines we rely on to the oxygen we breathe, plants are the foundation of life on Earth. They support entire ecosystems and often live remarkably complex, and sometimes downright bizarre, lifestyles.
I’ve always been especially drawn to unusual and interesting plants. While many rare or exotic species are fascinating, they can also be challenging to grow and may not always fit into a typical landscape. That’s what makes native plants so special. These are the plants that belong here. They have evolved over thousands of years to thrive in our local climate, soils, and weather conditions without requiring constant intervention. Native plants offer beauty, support pollinators and wildlife, and often need less watering, fertilizer, and maintenance than many non-native alternatives.
After years of struggling to find high-quality native plants that were both affordable and conveniently available, I decided to start my own nursery to serve the Baltimore Metro area. By growing our plants from seed and propagations rather than purchasing finished retail stock like other local nurseries, I’m able to offer healthy, locally grown native plants at prices that make it easier for everyone to add more natives to their landscapes.
Today, Jo-Mar Ag LLC operates from our farm at 3613 Clayton Road, Joppa, Maryland 21085. We maintain limited posted retail hours, and visits are also welcome by appointment. Our farm setting allows customers to see many plants growing in a real-world environment while receiving personalized advice about selecting and caring for native species.
